NEW! Random Thoughts Thursdays

Random Thoughts Thursdays, yeah...I like that...that certainly works.
Some time ago I blogged about why the color bleu (French for blue) isn't brown, it certainly sounds more like what you'd expect brown to sound like, if colors made sounds. It occurred to me when a poster commented in agreement that perhaps, all of us creative geniuses (Wink) have similar random thoughts. Let's share, until I become intrigued by something other than random thoughts to blog about on Thursdays; this is it! I will allow anonymous posts just for Thursdays where we can all share our random thoughts. Tell a friend, tell a few, let's make this an interesting study of random fodder beginning this Thursday May 08, 2008.

Random Thoughts Thursday: Restlessness

Last week I visited with my girlfriend Amy and her testosterone filled team. As we sit drinking beer the subject of mid-life crises came up; moreover the subject as it relates to her husband, Chris and I. We are both approaching 35 and, each in our own insane way-feeling very restless. The irony is Chris and I could not be more different but this is one area where I totally get where he's coming from. I've been thinking about my restlessness since I left that evening and wondering if there is in fact some big existentialist theory as to why people freak out between 35 and 50. Here's what I've come up with. It's totally logical, but don't go writing your thesis on it because,well... after all it's Random Thoughts Thursday and this is me we're talking about. Next week, I could very well conclude that I'm no longer restless and that it was due to Mercury's position. Or, further that I was never restless and it was merely a delusional result of pesticides in my produce.

Okay, so are you ready? When you're young there is so much to do and it's all new, so you're restless all the time. You wanna play blocks, dig in your ass, pull on your parts, make new sounds and more. This goes on for a few years and then you calm down for a bit before you discover other people and you're restless again; you wanna play with their parts and dig in their asses and talk to them on the phone until your parents rip it from the wall. Then, you marry that person and you calm down for an extended period of time, before you know it you're old and you realize you're going to die soon (2012 is what they tell me) and what do you know...you get restless all over again! Only, you can't dig, pull or 'discover' anymore lest ye suffer the mightiest smite...so what do you do? Well, I'm writing and crafting, creating, photographing and, totally tapping into my inner freaky flower child. (Twirls around barefoot amongst the dandelions.) Men, (Sighs.) they embarrass themselves on the basketball court with their sons' and once they've worn down the cartilage in their joints and inflamed all their bursae, they go out and buy a motorcycyle.

What are your thoughts on middle aged restlessness or any other random ramblings of a restless mind?

No Random Thoughts Today

I'm not feeling random today. Actually the events of the past couple days have been anything but random. I've started a detoxifying juice fast, Occupational therapy for the mystery that is impacting the functionality of my right hand and, last night I tuned in to CNN's Black in America report. So, um yeah random thoughts aren't exactly abound.

I'm hesitant to make any summation of my opinions on the news feature until I've watched the second half of it tonight. It is certainly a lot to digest, I'll give it that much. I found it important enough to corral the children into the family room for an unprecedented mandatory watching of the tube. But, I don't know-in relation to the way we've chosen to raise our children, if the content of the feature makes a matter at the end of the day. Again, I need to chew on that a bit.

Speaking of chewing, I'm doing alright with the fast. Knowing that I could quit at anytime and eat one of my aging mocha creme cookies yet, not doing so feels pretty amazing. You can see what is keeping the grey matter wrinkled and fully functional here.

One pseudo-scientific finding that has been unveiled amidst all of my toxin-free thinking; a seemingly direct correlation between mastication, aggravation and the ability to thread and load a sewing machine bobbin as it contributes to the makings of a homicidal maniac. I have a tendency to push myself beyond the very fragile brink of sanity by taking on projects that are only practical in my impractical mind's eye. I've done it again and it involves tulle and that damn sewing machine. Sigh.

Time, time, time...

In a people house...

Ahhh, seasons change with the scenery
Weaving time in a tapestry
Won't you stop and remember me
At any convenient time
Funny how my memory slips while looking over manuscripts
Of unpublished rhyme
Drinking my vodka and lime

-Simon & Garfunkel-

A few weeks ago I deduced I'd been running approximately 2 weeks behind in life...or was it a week? Either way, I was running behind and the anxiety of impending deadlines felt much like impending death, without the rest and peaceful parts.

I buckled down, (read: neglected everyone and everything that wasn't on a list or whining) and got it all done, and done well. I'm still holding onto my 4.0 GPA with just two more assignments and one week to go. I'm equal parts proud and [insert English language translation of "blah"].

I know this seems awfully existentialist of me, especially since I generally reserve random thoughts for Thursdays, but does the end ever really justify the means? I mean, when you're done doing, you've only freed yourself to do more-and, hopefully if you're lucky- different stuff.

That being said, now that my studies and one craft fair are done, I'm in full out holidays prep and planning mode. The leaf is in the table, the menu is planned, the vegetables have been forewarned and baking anxiety is in full gear. (Baking is evil.)

What have you all been up to in my absence?

Random Thoughts Thursday:TMI

I almost considered smoking again... almost.

Too much information, too much Internet, too much interaction, too much intrigue, too much interest, too much ignorance, just too much...

Favorite Guy told me a week ago that I read too much, and my initial reaction was to scoff and raise my brow in disdain-this is natural reflexive action for me in many cases...okay most cases. He wasn't talking about books, but of blogs and feeds and social networking foolery. Y'know, he was right; there's just no way to come into contact with the immensity of information/ignorance on the Interwebs and not be affected by it. I think I need an intervention, so here's my note to self, and y'all.

The following topics have negatively affected me:

-Antoine Dodson: Okay, so the ignorance entailed in the whole Dodson debacle rested most uncomfortably in my craw. For one, a woman was sexually assaulted! I fail to understand the impetus for comedy in such a heinous crime. Secondly, and I don't generally get all sociopolitical, the "funny" part was how Dodson managed a stereotypical trifecta on national news: sexuality, race and class. Um, yeah, I'm still not getting the joke.

-Hair, hair everywhere: The natural hair movement is moving me to fits of frustration! Am I the only person who sees the danger here? How is natural hair in and of itself, a movement? Unless you are taking your afro clad asses out to the streets and the voting booths and the SCHOOLS you have a hairstyle, you are not a movement. Now this is not to demean or take anything away from those who wear their hair natural symbolize their stance on issues in which they actively engage-this is about the poseurs. This is about the polypeptide proselytizers who've run amok on the Interwebs. When I chemically straightened my hair, I did not trade in my self-love and cultural awareness card any more than I traded it in when I shaved it off, braided it up, chunked it, spiked it, highlighted it, twisted it, etc. On rare occasion when I put my previously perkier breasts in a bra, I'm no less a womanist than I've always been. For a people to wield the same weapons of separation and othering that were previously used against them and call it a movement? Hmm, I suppose, if moving backwards is a movement, y'all might be on to something.

-Ebonics: Funny this would come up just as I was studying sociolinguistics! When I speak, most people recognize a regional (East Coast/New York) dialect. You can tell me for yourselves within the next few weeks when I will begin vlogging occasionally. The same can be said for most people, yes? So what's the big deal about Ebonics? I made a cameo appearance in the Etsy fora yesterday and a few "community" members were discussing the subject of Ebonics. Big mistake on my part, having already been overloaded with Internet fuckery. Not only were the comments bordering on overtly racist, but the examples of Ebonics used to further arguments against accepting it as a language were clips from comedy films and television clips. Le sigh. I shared this quote from one of my textbooks and made my exit: "Ebonics is no more a lazy form of English than Italian is a lazy form of Latin." (Rickford 1997) If you were uncertain on your stance, chew on that for a bit.

But, look what I found: Sistah Vegan: Black Female Vegans Speak on Food, Identity, Health and Society. Adds to cart. The end justifies the means, kinda.

Random Thought Thursday

I watch and talk to my pets a lot, probably more than I should admit in a public forum. I thrive on the infinite wisdom that exists in their silence. I do know however, should they break that silence... and, ever begin speaking to me- like in "people talk", I should seek professional help. In the interim though, my thoughts on their thoughts make for great Thursday blog fodder.

Beau, our recently transitioned guinea pig was an introvert like me.
The pic above was his initial response to the arrival of the cats back in 2006.

Beau thoroughly enjoyed his short reign as the only fur child.
There were many perks...

But all good things must...well y'know, that couldn't last long!

There were certainly some boundary issues to work out between he and Biju.
Biju was, er... a more worldly gal and certainly not the best house guest!

She often had to be confronted about these affronts.

But through it all they remained "friends 'til the end".

And, as she looks out over him now, I bet she misses him just as much as we do.

So call your friends, even if they're- well y'know, a little different.

Cars and Drivers: The End

Pedestrian: T.Allen-Mercado

Continued from [here].

The day started off well, this I could tell by the words I used to describe the concept of God. My sensors were hyper-alert, I was attune to his sensitivity on the matter, yet assertive in the presentation of my own thoughts. We had lunch, said our closing thoughts and off we went.

When we arrived at the 30th annual Phoenix Gay Pride Festival, it felt like home for the holidays. I'm not a fan of clubs and cliques, and "organizations", but this was different, it's about equality and humanity, and I felt empowered and enlightened just being present. There I was in my new kinda-mini-for-a-36-year-old-mom skirt, feeling at home, empowered, enlightened and pretty damn cute. I got the femme Black boys' nod-which is truly saying something. Then, for a moment the sky eclipsed, when just beyond the hill I spotted those two. My own advice came back to me as quickly as our eyes did meet; the test drive was about to go down.

I may have turned to Joe-although there was so much going on strategically and chemically between my ears that it's hard to be certain in hindsight. I was literally playing out my every move like a chess match: left foot forward, smile, don't break eye contact, shoulders up, right foot forward and again, and again, over the several feet before we all met up at the crosswalk, metal versus me.

Their engines were hardly audible. The buffoonish one may have rolled down her window, but I broke eye contact and dismissed her advances shortly after acknowledging her existence. Amidst the idling engines and random banter, I could feel my legs gain their previous level of fortitude and certainty, my brows unfurl, my pulse no longer palpable. It was safe to cross, and I did so, without incident. And, as much as I wanted to give my NYC pedestrian glare-once I knew I was safe-I didn't, perhaps next time. Winks and laughs.

If this story feels like it could have been written/told by you, you may have generalized social anxiety disorder, read more on this condition and others [here].

Ack!

Be nice. Have empathy. That is rude. Is that really necessary? Be sensitive. You are being negative. That is not PC. Persecution.Communism. Oppression. Racism. Fascism. Priapism! Give me a fucking break already will you?!
Truth be told, I am very sensitive on the giving and receiving ends. I am also enlightened progressive and culturally aware in so far as to not willfully malign any one's character, race creed or other lifestyle, gender, religious preferences. I am also a writer. I live for words and the feelings they elicit. "I have the plague." I do not "feel ill". "It is hotter than Africa". It isn't just, "rather warm". I send people to "Hell" without questioning their religious affiliations. I say "You're a fucking moron!"-without first testing IQ. And, yes! You can be a fucking moron and Mensa as far as I'm concerned-whilst painting a mental picture, sculpting a story, taking a snapshot of life in words.(With all due respect to 98th percentile)

The pleasure and plight of the right-brained thinker is in the nuances of everything we encounter, everything we dream, think, extrapolate-is heightened and magnified so that every minute piece of meaning, affect, taste, smell, color is gleaned. It is difficult to understand the way others view the world even other Right-siders, because like art and feelings it all boils down to perception. Your perception is the only reality.

I design jewelry, and I've been quite successful. Ironically enough, I do not wear jewelry. When designing a piece, I paint a mental picture of the wearer and I design for them. Every piece that I make has a buyer in mind. Does that make me prejudiced, of course it does. Is it also stereotyping that a specific piece of jewelry would be worn be a select group of people? Yup, sure is. Is that a bad thing, only if you perceive it so. My intent is to hone in on personal style and whether we choose to accept it or not removing any and all prejudice from the human brain is an impossibility. It is designed to categorize everything. Way before you even think it, there are cells working to select, sort, batch and box all of the info in your bucket. If you are not grouping images, thoughts and ideas, please see a mental health practitioner pronto!

So, Tameka what the hell are you talking about really? I'm saying Ack!, Lighten up. Take a chill pill (Great now I've pissed off all of my fellow antidepressant dependant cronies. But I'm sure the pharmaceuticals industry welcomes the plug-so we're even.) Stop the perpetual activism and just let people live. All of this censorship is so very stifling and uncreative. You can't please everyone all of the time, and trying to really annoys the shit out of me. (No offense to anyone suffering from incontinence or other intestinal disorders). Shut up and stand up people!(Use of the phrase, "stand up" is a metaphor for assertion. I am in no way singling out those who are unable to stand for health/medical/religious/random reasons.) You alone give power to meaninglessness when you assign a powerful meaning. Don't drink the Kool-Aid! (No offense to the makers employees, drinkers of Kool-Aid brand products and their affiliates.) Thank you.

Home
In a People House: framed original art (top rt) by Etsy's Dilka Bear

Harriet Beecher Stowe once said, “Home is a place not only of strong affections, but of entire unreserved; it is life's undress rehearsal, its backroom; its dressing room, from which we go forth to more careful and guarded intercourse, leaving behind...cast-off and everyday clothing.”

In a People House: chair Goodyear, AZ Goodwill refurb by: me

It's been a long week here at home, the home office, home school. The toll of a long and unforgiving desert summer is beginning to weigh upon me; temperatures are high and tolerance is low, my days are long, my patience short, my head hung low, my shoulders high, my thoughts loose and my words terse. I'm fatigued. This summer air feels stale and uninspiring. I'm ready to move on and leave it behind, for now.

In a People House: ceramic honeybee paperweight by Hjalmarson Pottery, Phoenix, AZ

I'm looking forward to a fresh breeze, an early dusk; a reprieve, a few stolen hours for my love and me to be free- it has been some time. And you, what are you looking forward to? What will you leave behind?
Peace and autumn

Oh, shut up...

And, look at my pretty new dresses!

Thursdays are generally my profound, random thought day, but I've exhausted my capacity to think nice thoughts given the current political climate of the interwebs. Most of you know, I live in Arizona, Valley of the Sun and most recently "valley of no damn fun", depending on who you ask. You should also know that I try (but, sometimes fail) to discuss politics only with seemingly sane people who also possess the ability to insert their elbows into their ears. So...looks around for takers-I guess that's none of you, huh? Fair enough. How do you like my new dresses?

Love, Beer and Breastmilk

Now I'm not sure I've mentioned this previously, and if not-bookmark it: the only thing I hate more than stupid people are their offspring. This is not an idiosyncrasy, it is a deep-rooted philosophy. Just ask my worldly, pubescent son, anytime a new girl calls I ask, "Well, can she read?!"

My children have a special advantage because my husband and I get it. We understand karma, we believe and closely abide by the rules of the universe; under different headings, but the same end result. This makes for well-rounded, non-violent, socially intelligent children also known as "victims". My daughter, because she was born during the height of my social experimentation-even, more. Yael (pronounced Yah'ell) was nursed until she self-weaned at 3.5 years old, she is naturally intuitive and completely secure and at one with herself. She is the type of child that everyone comments on. I cried at a parent-teacher conference when the teacher stood up behind her hardwood desk, grabbed by hand in both of hers and praised the job I've done "raising such a conscientious, good person". You can see why I might just be a tad livid when my prized contribution to the universe appears at the front door sopping wet and sobbing after she was submerged in the puddle of an irrigation project in our local green belt at the hands of her "former friend".

For the past 120 days, I have been stridently moving toward an ultimate goal of Ahimsa. For years, I have advocated against spanking and more recently war, but many of my subconscious thoughts were in contradiction to this kind of peaceable existence. I've been working hard at being a better, more balanced, loving person inside and out. I needn't tell you that I resort to my primitive animal kingdom instincts when someone...anyone, fucks with my family.

When Yael came in, one look at her and I knew just who it was. She'd participated in some random act of cruelty last year around this time and more recently had lied about something trivial but enough for me to have the friendship selection discussion with Yael just this past weekend. Perhaps, it was Yael's decision to separate herself that led to this, I'm not sure but I do know that it took everything and I mean everything in me to not go outside...(Ok, well I did go outside). But, what I wanted to do was snatch her up and shake all of the high fructose corn syrup filled Otter Pops right out of her emaciated, ugly little ass. And, I would have if she had been within reach when I emerged. (And had Joe not called me "Cheryl Part II" as I headed for the door) Cheryl, my mother at 54 years old, this woman will still engage in an all out, "Go-get-your-motha'-and-I'll-kick-her-ass- too" fest. It is instinctive, the intrinsic nature of the species. "See the cute little bear cubs? Nice, now go on about your business 'cause their mother will slap your whole damn head off!" Got it? Okay, good.

I've always known, no matter how oddly she treats me that my mother has my back and I've carried that onto my own children but in an adjusted light. I love my children infinitely, I fervently (ad nauseam, just ask Puberty Man) preach compassion, respect and self-respect. In most cases they subconsciously practice avoidance where dangerous and/or parasitic social situations are an element. But, like everyone else, they will have their moments. The split second decision NOT to react, although gravely unsettling for the confrontational aggressor in me will pay off. Yael does not understand now, but she will. She will undeniably revere and respect the laws of the universe just as the rest of us here at home do. We've mustered up a little more love in our house today. Similar to the way you'd gather around someone who'd been attacked by a virus, cancer or any other draining encounter.

I guess the painful part as a mother is that Yael seemed to place more emphasis on the lost friendship resulting from the incident rather than the incident itself. There really is no easy way to express to her at 8 years old, that it is the other child that should be mourning a great loss. There is no easy way to squelch the pain in the pit of my stomach knowing that this is just one of many in a series of hurt feelings, abuse and rejection she will face in a lifetime. Cheryl had the best of intentions but it just isn't feasible to fight the world, and it isn't just. It is a battle no one wins when you really examine the outcome.

There was a time in my life when the closest person to me threw me in a proverbial puddle and rejected me. I fought tooth and nail (What is the history of the meaning behind that expression, do you know?). I formed every weapon of defense and destruction possible and the situation went on to grow bigger and uglier. It metastasized like a cancer and literally consumed me. I spent so much time and energy fighting that I left little time for love; self-love or any other love. I attempted suicide that year but I succeeded at something far greater. In one of my prescription drug filled hazes I stumbled into a card shop and bought a post card that reads:

"I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.” ~Mother Teresa

I'm a natural cynic, so believe me when I say this is the only way to go. Think about it, when someone pisses you off, disappoints you rejects you, etc. We engage in this kind of eye for an eye warfare that leaves us all blind (read your Gandhi people). When you are true to yourself and either perfectly love the opposition in all of their imperfection or love yourself enough to not subject yourself to an abusive or otherwise unhealthy relationship, things seem to just work themselves out. If you've ever had a break-up and said, "Oh great, now that I'm single nobody wants me". It's because your aura is saying, "Look at me, I suck, I'm a leper, etc". But when you put your size 2T jeans on and a little "war-paint" (Iva, thanks! I love you) and do that little, "Go me" dance in the mirror-it's a miraculous transformation! Trust me, it's not the jeans, (Even if they are Gap low-rise boot-cut stretch-don't be fooled) it is the LOVE. I am truly convinced that love, beer and breast milk are the cure for everything. Stephanie says it is water...I don't know I gotta challenge her on that one.

Yael spent the day watching DisneyChannel with Joe in an old pair of my 3" Enzo Angiolini pumps. She's about to have cake and ice cream with Jordan and tomorrow morning she'll join me for yoga. We're gonna love her through this time and all of the others. You can't fight fire with fire but, breathe easy fire does eventually consume itself... always.

I felt cathartic writing this, it will be one of the entries in Yael's Red Book-a collection of poems, quotes and stories I've been compiling for presentation at her Menses Celebration. Now, go kiss your kids, call your mom, push your chair away from your desk and do a quick "Go me" dance, the tough times (and stupidity, hopefully) won't last long.

Namaste.

Linear thoughts are overrated...

{excerpt from page 53}
The Highly Sensitive Person, Elaine N. Aron Ph. D.

Seemingly out of nowhere, yes? Darn the Universe is good! I read this while we were vacationing, (I am now back at home and quite refreshed.) and immediately felt a tinge-you know the one when you realize; hark, this is me. Yes, well that one.

I'm either all the way in, pining about my seeming lack of motivation and trying to jumpstart it with all matter of caffeine and brute force, or all the way out at sea drowning in brilliant-albeit overwhelmingly exhausting, creative ideas. Right now however, I'm in a good place and hoping I can ride this feeling out at a comfortable pace through the holiday hoopla and into an exciting, but tolerable new year. Which incidentally will begin sometime in February, likely on a Tuesday because the pressure of beginning at the beginning is far too great.

I hope you've all been doing, feeling and living well!

Random Thought: Hey Dad, about those apologies...

True remorse is never just a regret over consequence;
it is a regret over motive.
Mignon McLaughlin, The Neurotic's Notebook, 1960

I've been thinking a lot about my dad lately. August marked the anniversary of his death, only I don't recall how many years it's been or what day it was. I blocked it out before it even happened. AIDS related death is such a slow agonizing sentence. It was shortly after my birthday when the dementia set in, that was the last time I visited. He wished me a happy seventh birthday and became ornery when I corrected him. I was an adult with a child of my own, seven years old was so long ago. I remember wondering what it was about that time that made him hold on to it. But I can't remember what age I said I was when I corrected him. The memories of those last few years are blurred and have eventually faded from view. As the painful flood of emotions make their way to my fragile consciousness they're met with a preemptive squelch from the wonders of modern medicine.

My dad was quite the communicator, he had a way of-albeit an insufferably long winded way, getting to the very craw of a matter. He taught me about grace and diplomacy, he taught me how to apologize, how and when to accept one. Like all dynamic duos, my mother sat at the other side of the helm doling the dish on how to take anyone down at the knees with a stern glare and a dose of well timed vitriol-she's a whole other post.

I discovered early on that I do not like to apologize, I'd rather itch. With that discovery, I made a conscious decision to a. Listen more, speak less b. Overthink everything to the point of being too exhausted to speak at all. It works. It may not be practical, but seldom do I have to stammer over to some sullen faced human with my shoulders slumped and my eyelids low to mutter those words, you know the ones.

I also learned oftentimes what people offer apology for and wish to be excused from, has little to do with the person they've allegedly wronged. They want, and often need a get out of jail free card. Whether they're being held by guilt or remorse, it is they who are being held. Playground psychology, if you will. I don't think we ever get past the time our parent-along with some other equally embarrassed parent, forcibly brought us forward, to confront someone whom we probably felt quite justified in maiming, for the symbolic truce; a vacillatory, "Sorry." A reluctant shaking of hands and a Machiavellian grin. You may or may not still get the snot beat out of you when you get home. (That might explain what all the playground pugilism was about in the first place).

I guess what I'm thinking is, what really is the point of an apology if you're not sorry? And further, why must we accept one simply because it has been offered? Why the pressure? Suffice it to say, I've yet to end or reconcile any ties based on the concept of an apology. Even when the sincerity is present, some things will fix themselves and others, well others just aren't meant to be fixed. I wonder what my dad would say. And you, what are your thoughts?

Day Three and some of 4 and 5...

I have certainly gotten used to this. I can't believe how much of a time warp the fora were. I still haven't fully maximized my free time, but I actually have free time-which is a start.

I've gotten much of my current inventory up on my Flickr! account and will slowly begin integrating the older designs-just for shits and giggles really, because I have no intentions on duplicating them...not even the more popular items. I'm feeling a jewelry designing hiatus coming on. My initial thought was that I'd make a few paper goods, but now I'm not so sure. I may just need some brooding intellectual time. Winks. Did you know that dolphins aren't all that flippin' friendly? Good stuff to read about, you'll rethink that trip to Seaworld!
Who knows, but I'm certainly staying out of the public (fora) eye for a while. I'm looking at a 30 day reprieve, perhaps. I've got to get a handle on some internal stuff before I head back out there in the word wide webs.
It's been a gradual process. While I've been present, there've been a few topics that I've put on my mental list without sharing my thoughts publicly-namely activism and altruism. They are definitely stirring up much thought, not enough to write about just yet...but I feel it percolating.
Other random happenings...Nate was here! Right here in AZ. Joe, Yael and I met with my friend Nathan for a short spell on Monday. It was bittersweet...I connect with so few people that leaving him there at his hotel felt so final and somber. Blows raspberry. I have a handful of super duper people in my life...they are a handful and they are like my right hand. We're all at that weird phase now, with child-rearing and careers there isn't a whole lot of time for folly. It was really nice to see him again, nevertheless. It has prompted me to focus on doing little things that make me smile, like taking photos of my favorite shoes or tees or foods! Yes, be afraid, be very afraid!

Random Thought Thursday

Pride or Prudence?

Giant Condom Wrapper Pillow with Giant Fabric Condom by Little Elk on Etsy.com

So, a couple weeks ago (yes, I've been thinking this one through) I'm having an arbitrary conversation about kids and kid stuff; trends, friends, the usual fodder. I mention that the Mighty Pubescent One is dating and silence befalls a once fluid conversation. The conversation resumes- albeit spasmodically, "Oh no, St. Pious The Divine (name changed to protect the probably not as innocent as his parents believe) is not allowed to date and when he goes out, if girls are there, I send Sister Chastity the Beloved. She'll tell me if he talks to any girls." The young people of whom I am referring are 18 and 16 years old. And, no these are not faith-based restrictions; which I respect even if I disagree.

I then ask, The Exalted Commander of Hormones if she believes that fear and forbidding are a formidable opponent to human nature, to which she...well, I blocked the ensuing nonsensical tirade from recollection. Let's just say she was quite certain that fear and forbidding conquers all. I then ask, "Well, do you discuss methods of disease and pregnancy prevention just in case an errant erection eludes you"? She uttered a vehement, "no".

Now, one thing I've come to understand about myself is that I have a very difficult time accepting when my friends and/or associates are: 1. Ignorant 2. Cruel to animals or children 3. Not fans of the Dave Matthews Band. So to rule out any of the aforementioned, I try my probing questions technique. "Do the children ride bicycles, in-line skates, scooters and the like? Do they wear helmets? Does the donning of said helmet somehow encourage the children to propel themselves from high buildings in front of motorized vehicles or careening down rough terrain at high velocity?" The discussion lightened a bit. I think I even heard a "Girl you's crazy as hell!" Then, I went in for the kill. Dropping an octave or so, I asked, "Isn't protecting our children's lives and quality of life the prudent choice? I mean, this really isn't about pride and expectations, or is it"? What are your thoughts?

My 100th Post!

My 100th post! Fireworks glare, throws confetti and dances like little old dude on the Six Flags commercial. Granted, as long as I've been at this I should have twice as many posts, but hey-100 is an admirable number!

I wanted to do it big, you know an over dramatized centennial event, but if I lollipop too long, I'll never get it done. Oh the pressure! So...deep breath, since much of my life is centered around well... self-centered, I've decided much like that other self-centered, albeit much wealthier Black woman- to highlight some of my favorite things.

I'm going to call it, The Tea List. Original, yes? If you've been paying attention, you know that I am "Tea". If you are privileged enough to be featured, you know to expect great things. As I understand it, all quasi-Kool-Aid connoisseurs buy whatever that other Black woman recommends. So, let's see. Winks.

~Enjoy.

The Tea List

T.Allen-Mercado

Disclaimer: I have yet to attain "Queen of the Kool-Aid Clan" status, so some of the items featured here have yet to be purchased, but only because I haven't read The Secret and focused on plentiful Paypal funds. I do however trust my gut and well, you should too...

The Purse

This grey tote with navy/white striped interior is a Spring/Summer staple large enough for cell phones, atomisers... and, whatever other random gadgets folks that actually leave the house would carry. This design by fellow Etsian Emma Pardos of Barcelona is available on Etsy for under $40.00 USD.

The Read

Okay, I haven't read this poetry chapbook yet but, who can't relate to The Animal Husband? Besides, who carries cool bags and reads Danielle Steele?! C'est vrai ?! So go check your Paypal balance and head to Etsy where you can purchase this ZNE by Christine Hamm for less than the price of an "Irregular" poly cotton blend t-shirt! Limited Editions available from Wicked Pen.

The Drink

Favorite guy and I ventured into the forbidden land of BevMo last week when unbridled inebriation was possible as Puberty Man was on Spring holiday in NYC. We canvassed the aisles for a bit, I won. We left with the ultimate; Leinenkugel's Explorer Pack. There is a taste in here for just about everyone...or at least everyone that drinks beer, like no not for the kids, mmk? Good. Joe's fave is the Summer Shandy it has hints of lemony goodness, and...I like all the others, but I'm partial to the Honey Wheat. See my Flickr! for the full review.

For The Home

A bit confusing, but try and follow. I love party planning. I don't necessarily love party go-ers or even parties, but all of the planning, cooking, decorating and independent creative work that goes into it makes me high! This July 12th, I'll be 35 and yes, I'm already planning...these coasters by Etsy artist Briana Taylor are a true conversation piece (I just hope they talk amongst themselves and leave me out of it) Laughs. I bought them all, but have a look in her shop for equally awesome housewares.

For The Body

As many of you are aware, I'm a 'not so dirty hippie'. Patchouli is a big part of my daily routine, for its mood lifting properties, woodsy musk and, overall symbol of the official leftist liberal scum status quo. Dennis Anderson (yeah, he's on Etsy too) makes a great Patchouli soap. I don't have a pic because I used it all, it was just that good!

The Philosophy

It's been nearly a year since I left the Evil Blue Octagon to simplify my life and regain my sanity. It's been over a year since I swore off the purchase and usage of leather goods or any animal 'by products'. Pretty In Peace was born of a desire to simplify my life and purify my thoughts. Corporate America can make for many an impure thought and action. Well here I am, in all of my self employed Indie goodness. I purchased this piece of jewelry from yet another Etsian to celebrate this milestone on my journey. This Pure and Simple anatomically correct heart pendant is available at Nanopod.Etsy.com in limited quantities.

The Tchatchke -As a Native NYer (Queens) I reserve the right to define tchatchkes as object d'arts.

I'm all about aesthetics. I am happiest when surrounded by items that please my senses. That said, I try not to overdo it. "Shut up Joe!" He compares me to his aunt that lives in Tchatchke land with crochet throws everywhere. But, every now and then I'm struck by just the right addition to my cozy little biome called home. Bonnie B. Pottery makes such an item. A cupcake consuming turtle-have you ever?! And, she bakes some decadent looking kick your ass chocolate chip cookies too!

The Discovery

ACEOs Art cards editions and originals. I'm hooked. Over all else, my dad stressed the importance of education; specifically art and literature.I've done pretty well in the literary department, but until I found the ACEO it seemed highly unlikely I'd have an art collection anywhere near the size of my library. Not anymore. I started collecting these 3.5x2.5 works at the beginning of the year and every new piece and artist has been as exciting as the first. I'm currently hooked on Etsy artist Justin Potts. There's an innocence, a depth and, a whimsical feel in his work that elevates me, like a visit with a childhood friend. Here is a pic of my latest purchase, it is my 3rd piece by Justin.

The Future

Meh... perhaps, the masses aren't running fervently to purchase my list of coveted keepsakes, I can live with that. I don't know that I possess all of the chameleonesque "qualities" needed to secure a spot in the world of Kool Aid dreams, but I will keep doing what makes me happy and keeps me sane, and if you're still reading-I'm not doing too bad. Smiles. Peace!
